the Ministry of Corrections, Public Safety and Policing is responsible for young offender programs and services in our province. In Saskatchewan, youth who offend are held accountable through Secure and Open Custody, Alternative Measures, Judicial Interim Release, and Supervision of Community-based Orders.

Legislation

On April 11, 2003 the Youth Criminal Justice Act (Canada)  replaced The Young Offenders Act. The Youth Criminal Justice Act (Canada) deals with youth who break federal government laws. The provincial government is responsible for administering the Act or making sure the programs and services outlined in it are available in Saskatchewan. The main objectives of Young Offender programs and services are to:

  • hold youth accountable for their unlawful behaviour;
  • ensure society is protected from youth who offend, particularly dangerous youth or chronic repeat offenders and;
  • work with youth to reduce the likelihood they will re-offend.

All programs and services for youth who offend are developed and delivered with the safety of the community in mind.

In Saskatchewan, the Youth Court has sole jurisdiction in the determination of the young person's sentence and the level of custody (open or secure).
