It is important for everyone - individuals, businesses and other organizations, as well as all levels of government - to be involved in emergency planning and preparedness.
- Individuals, businesses and other organizations manage their own property and affairs.
- If the magnitude of an emergency exceeds the capacity of an individual, business, or other organization to respond, municipalities are called upon to provide assistance.
- If the magnitude of an emergency situation exceeds a municipality's or a group of municipalities' ability to respond, the province is called upon to provide support.
- If the magnitude of an emergency situation exceeds the province's capacity to respond, the federal government is called upon to provide support.
Corrections and Public Safety is responsible for The Emergency Planning Act. The Act contains provisions for emergency planning, emergency powers and disaster relief. Corrections and Public Safety, through SaskEMO, is the provincial government's lead agency for emergency management. It:
- maintains the provincial government's overall emergency plan;
- coordinates provincial government resources during a state of emergency;
- assists government departments, Crown corporations and agencies with emergency planning;
- encourages the formation of local government emergency measures organizations and aids in the development of local emergency plans;
- provides on-site consultation to municipal officials during government states of emergency; and
- co-ordinates the delivery of the Joint Emergency Preparedness Program (JEPP) with the Federal Office of Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness Canada.
