RECOVERY AND CLEANUP Sand and Sandbag DisposalYour local authority will make a schedule of times and locations available to you for sandbag pickup. The Ministry of Highways will be picking up sand from sandbags used for flood protection. If you need help with getting your sandbags to the pick-up site, contact your local authorities. Empty sandbags can be handled like regular garbage and disposed of in an approved land fill. While it may be tempting to make use of the sand inside them, please note that the sand should not be disposed of in or near bodies of water, in playgrounds, or in sandboxes where children may come in contact with it. The sand may have been contaminated by floodwaters, sewage, or road salt, depending on where they were deployed. Sand from sandbags might be suitable for construction or landscaping purposes. |
