Corrections, Public Safety and Policing, working with the Ministry of Government Services, is committed to an ongoing process to reduce the impact of our buildings on the environment. This includes renovation and retrofit projects to make existing buildings more sustainable.

The project to replace the Regina Provincial Correctional Centre presented an opportunity to build a new, sustainable green building. The new Centre was designed and built with the goal of achieving an energy efficiency target 30 percent better than the Model National Energy Code Building standards. It was registered as a LEED project, and is still being evaluated. The Ministry expects the RPCC will achieve LEED Silver certification.

The Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Green Building Rating System is an internationally accepted benchmark for the design, construction and operation of green buildings around the world, and is widely recognized across Canada. LEED uses a point rating system to assess various green building strategies used by designers and builders. The four levels of certification are: Certified, Silver, Gold and Platinum.

The new building was officially opened in August 2008. The following documents provide information about the requirements for LEED certification of the Regina Provincial Correctional Centre project.
