Offenders sentenced to two years or more serve their sentence in a federal penitentiary. In certain cases federal offenders are held in provincial correction centres for a period of time. Some examples include:
- where federal offenders sentenced in adult criminal courts are held in provincial correctional centres until they waive their right to appeal, or the 15-day appeal period expires;
- where federal offenders with less than two years remaining to be served can be transferred to a provincial correctional centre to serve the remainder of the sentence closer to home;
- where offenders released on federal parole, who violate parole, are held in a correctional centre pending a decision by the parole board; or
- where the parole board revokes or terminates a parole, the offender may serve a short period of time in a correctional centre before being returned to a federal penitentiary.
