The National Building Code of Canada

Saskatchewan adopts the National Building Code of Canada (NBC) by regulation under provisions of The Uniform Building and Accessibility Standards Act (the UBAS Act) with few amendments as the minimum standard for building and accessibility.

The NBC establishes provisions to address the following four core objectives.

  • safety
  • health
  • accessibility for persons with disabilities
  • fire and structural protection of buildings

The 2005 edition of the NBC was adopted for use throughout Saskatchewan and effective October 1, 2009.

The National Fire Code of Canada

Saskatchewan adopts the National Fire Code of Canada (NFC) by regulation under provisions of The Fire Prevention Act, 1992 as the standard for the fire safe operation of buildings and facilities.

The NFC establishes provisions to address the following three core objectives.

  • safety
  • health
  • fire protection of buildings and facilities

The 2005 edition of the NFC was adopted for use throughout Saskatchewan and effective October 1, 2009.

2010 Codes Adoption

Saskatchewan adopts the National Building Code of Canada (NBC) as the minimum standard for the construction and renovation of buildings throughout the province. The National Fire Code of Canada (NFC) is adopted as the minimum standard for the fire safe operation of buildings and facilities. Adoption of the 2010 National Building Code of Canada and the 2010 National Fire Code of Canada proposed for adoption on September 1, 2011 have been delayed pending finalization.  Additional information about the application of codes and standards can be found at the Building Standards website.  Keep watching our website for more information.
